2012 Cascina Liuzzi "Sil" Barbera d'Asti Superiore NIZZA, ITALY
For those who are not familiar with Barbera, it is a medium bodied red grape. This particular Barbera is from the township of Asti located in the Piedmont appellation of Italy. The qualification " Superiore " is awarded via blind tasting by the government appellation authority to the top 10% of all Barbera submitted. Those Barberas submitted must first meet required conditions of oak and bottle aging. That having been said,we are offering the 2012 Cascina Liuzzi "Sil" Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza because it is a truly enticing spring and summer grilling red. The"Sil" is plums and flowers on the nose. The flavor profile is plum which deepens into cherry and then blueberry, all filled with spice. The tannins are velvety and this Barbera is big without being too big for summer grilling.The spice range begins with the exotics with allspice on the front palate and finishes with coco and cinnamin.
