2014 William Knuttel Malbec
Bradford Mountain, Peterson Vineyard,
Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma
248 Cases Produced
I am not always enthusiastic about Malbec. The finish is sometimes too oily for me personally. I mentioned that to Guru winemaker Bill Knuttel while tasting all of is wines. We were pre ordering virtually everything he makes, but even before tasting I was giving him a heads up that we were probably not ordering his Malbec....... Yet we did. Bill has a theory that if you prune back Malbec for maximum density as opposed to yield, that oil becomes rich spice. If what I am tasting now is of any indication- he is right.
Flavor Profile; The Knuttel Malbec is lush in dense berry flavors. Raspberry, blueberry and hints of cranberry combine with rich plums. The finish which I often find oily in Malbec, is Cocoa powder, really enticing Cocoa powder. This wine is layered and complex, big and velvety and chewy with excellent hints of leather. Frankly I would have never guessed it to be Malbec. I think this wine is quite the value. ............If you like sixty dollar Cabs, you will like the 2014 Knuttel Single Vineyard Malbec at $24.00 Friends of Francis (Normal Price $28.00), Rex
PS This is not to be confused with his lower level Dry Creek .
PS from Michele - Rex's first words out of his mouth after tasting this wine, was not something I can print....but I will say, we were all extremely pleasantly surprised. m
All of the very best, Rex and Michele

2013 Domaine de la Charbonniere Vacqueyras
$34.00 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12
We conduct a monthly lecture tasting at The Classic Café. That tasting was last night. Because this tasting series has become popular and generates good sales, we often get approached with impressive wines at very favorable price points, hence the price of this southern Rhone. The 2013 Charbonniere is all wild berry flavors, red, black and blue. This wine is spicy. Saffron, cinnamon and finally black pepper are
obvious throughout this big bodied red . The tannins are very integrated and appealing. Vacqueyras in general is known for great character and spice due to the rocky soil in which it must survive. Domaine de la Charbonniere is considered one of the top producers in the area that shows through. This Vacqueyras is a harmony of explosive flavors. Domaine Couron Marselan (French Ardeche)
Guess what we found!!!
Marselan is the name of the grape from which this wine is made. The varietal became legal in 1961 after years of cross cloning and pollinating Cabernet Savignon with Grenache. The result is a big powerful combination of blackberry, blueberry , plums and cassis. The biggest steak with the richest demi-glaze and the most peppercorns is a suitable meal to consider when serving this jubilee of dark multi berry flavors. A Maduro Cigar is a good choice as well.
