Monday we received a few bottles from importer Craig Baker. Included in those was the 2016 Gerard Seguin Chambolle Musigny Derriere le Four. The Chambolle we opened immediately. It was immediately impressive. The nose is filled with violets and wild berries.
The flavor profile is dark cherry mixed with raspberry. The finish is spiced with white pepper and dark chocolate. Michele pointed out that it reminded her of the 2009 Capitain Gagnerot Corton les Lollieres
Grand Cru and I completely agree.
(one of my all time favorite wines, ever!! So that means I love it! M)
Tuesday, having saved not quite half the bottle by only sticking the cork back in, we took it, along with a variety of other bottles to the BYOB, Mr Wok, a few of us were having dinner. Included was Len Musgrove, author of the Wine Bargain Sleuth who we taste with when ever possible. The Seguin Chambolle which was rich and multi layered the first day open,
was even richer the next day, showing more layers and the finish developed even brighter components than 24 hours before. This is an amazing Burgundy. I did not tell either Len or Michael Byington before tasting, that this Pinot had been open for two days. They were amazed at the structure and depth of fruit. We all thought the Chambolle was the hit of the evening. 2016 is an exceptional vintage. Production though was down by more than half. Hail hit the region during flowering, diminishing the amount of fruit produced, but increasing the extraction and depth of what was left which lends this vintage to some highly complex, beautiful Pinot Noirs. You can enjoy this one now or in 10 years.
All the best, Rex
Domaine Rene LeClerc Gevrey Chambertin 2013
We tasted a variety of great Burgundy yesterday. Included in that tasting was Rene LeClerc Gevrey Chambertin 2013. This is one of the legendary wines of this very legendary appellation. I have not seen it for sale in the United States since my time at Marty's. This Burgundy is incredible. The purity of the cherry is simply over the top. The fruit is electric and very red. Layers apron layers of extremely exotic Asian spices are pronounced throughout the outstanding length of this Leclerc. We have 50 bottles available, correction only 24 left!! We can offer them at $69. 5% off 6, 10% off 12.
That is a steal . At least at the table today, the Leclerc Gevrey out shined the Meo Camuzuet Clos de Vougeot pictured below and we pay $275 wholesale for the Clos de Vougeot. The best of the season! Rex
Do not know if you guys remember the Prieure Gevrey...this is every bit as good or even better. There were only 46 left - now only 24 left!!!! I bought some for our holidays!! I remember during the tasting Rex said he could drink this wine all day long....this is one of my markers of a great wine...drink all day, food or not, it is spectacular. Michele
2011 M. Chapoutier Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne
Hermitage, that place in the Northern French Rhone Valley, has for centuries been considered the home of the greatest Syrahs in the world. Chapoutier's la Sizeranne is year after year of stellar quality and is always highly collectible. The 2011 vintage is not only exceptional in stucture, it has entered its drinking period now. Consequently, this has already become a wine of multiple layers and flavor dynamics. Both red and black fruit, this wine is full of nuance!! Now the best part, normally pricing on this wine ranges from $99-$138
per bottle. Today we can offer the 2011 Chapoutier Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne at $75 per bottle, 10% off 6 or more!! Very Limited Availability!!
All the best, Rex & Michele
Ripe, with a lovely ensemble of loganberry, raspberry and blackberry fruit at the core, backed by singed anise, alder and briar notes. Shows good energy through the finish, with a backdrop of mulled spice that should emerge with cellaring. Best from 2015 through 2021. 92 points Wine Spectator
Moving to the reds, the 2011 Ermitage Monier de la Sizeranne doesn't pull any punches and dishes up sexy, voluptuous levels of black cherries, raspberry, spice, dusty rock and crushed flowers. Medium to full-bodied, textured and with low acidity, it is distinctly delicious and hard to resist. 92 points The Wine Advocate
"Saturated ruby. Ripe cherry, blackcurrant, olive and woodsmoke on the deeply scented nose. Broad and fleshy on entry, then more tightly coiled in the middle, offering an array of juicy red and dark fruit flavors and a touch of licorice pastille, The smoky quality comes back strong on the clinging, incisive finish, which features silky tannins, peppery spices and a hint of cola." 91 points Vinous / Antonio Galloni
"A selection of fruit from Méal, Bessards and Greffieux, Monier de la Sizeranne is tight and reticent in 2011, needing a day of air to get beyond its oak. Even then, the purple fruit feels held back by granite tannins, the contrast of ripe fruit and cool rock a reminder of the vintage's cool spells. Drink now with a thick steak or hold another seven to ten years." 90 points Wine & Spirits

2011 Domaine Charles Audoin Bourgogne (Pinot Noir)
I am currently involved in evaluating a bottle of 2011 Domaine Charles Audoin Bourgogne Rouge. The word Domaine is key here. This wine is all over production which means growth exceeds appellation control quantities allotted to a particular Premeire Cru vineyards. This is not negotiant fruit- and indeedthis Pinot Noir tastes of Premiere Cru components. The cherry flavors start black , then become redder with big indications of exotic spice including Mandarin Orange. This is the third time I have tried this wine. I have left it open for a day and watched as it has become more layered and the fruit more vibrant. There is no drop off over 24 hours leading me to believe that it will easily cellar for 7-10 years. I find myself in the strange and sudden situation of being very low on Burgundy so mine has been immediately consumed. The long very berry, very spicy finish makes this Pinot an excellent choice for Asian or Cajun cuisine and certainly Salmon. The price makes it perfect for hamburgers and the quality makes it quite right for PRIME beef and your best client.
