2009 Match Vineyards Butterdragon Cabernet
Some months back we tasted and sold the 2007 vintage of the Match, Butterdragon Hill Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. We liked it and more importantly we have received a great deal of positive feed- back for having recommended that wine. A few days ago we received a sample of the 2009 Match Butterdragon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. We had opportunity to open it last night. Had there been a second bottle on hand I would have opened it too. This 2009 vintage pours deep purple in color with just a hint of brick or cherry color on the edge of the hue. The nose is brambly berry mixed with violets and spice. The flavor profile is one of rich dark plum flavors finishing with slightly smoky blueberry . Finally, the tannin layer is rich and supple making this Cab the definition of velvety and luxurious from the moment it is poured. The 2009 Match Butterdragonn Napa Cab is normally $65-$69. Last night marked the 5th consecutive year we have hosted Peter Stolpman of Stolpman Vineyards ( Ballard Canyon , Santa Ynez Valley ) for a tasting of their wonderfully crafted wines. Many of our guests have collected Stolpman wines since that first tasting some five years back. The wines showed incredibly even though they had arrived via Fed Ex that very same day. Hey guys.. We had a packed house!!!! Just in case you want to get in on the wines we tasted last night, the Rose was a huge success, even among those who claim to not like Rose. The L'Avion, Peter's personal favorite (at least non-red) was spectacular. I adored the Estate Syrah and Angeli!! I hear the La Croce was the 2nd biggest hit, but somehow, I was busy chatting and missed the last wine!!!! Seriously, you cannot go wrong with any wine here...they were all spectacular. If you did not get to meet Peter this year...there is always next year...or who knows...maybe late spring!! And pardon any typos...we had a late night!! Michele
The last of the heralded 2009 and 2010 vintages of Howell at the Moon , Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ( Napa ) have been sheltered in a temperature controlled cellar here in Dallas. That distributor deeply discounted them yesterday. Having tasted these wines over and over again ( with great gusto ) through the years, we immediately procured them. The Estate Cabernet is from 3 plots on Howell Mountain. They made a little over 700 cases of each vintage. The Knoll Vineyard is at the very top of the hill, the most sun, the most exposure the best drainage, the coolest nights and most elevation in this most heralded of micro climates leads to rich explosive complexity. Every wine listed below is beyond outstanding, highly discounted and no longer obtainable. Please take 5% discounting on any mixture of 6 bottles and 10% discounting on any mixture of 12 or more.

2012 Silverado Mt George Merlot, Estate Grown
Yesterday we received a sample of the 2012 Silverado Mt George Estate Merlot. My, what a decadent red. There are violets on the nose which combine with ash
( volcanic soil ) and brambly spice. Michele's first comment when tasting the Silverado was " there are definitely blueberries here". There is a ton of blueberry on the front palate which darkens to boysenberry and finally blackberry. The finish is big dark berry flavors infused with smoke and cocoa. The 2012 Silverado Mt George Merlot is certainly a red meat wine which married wonderfully with the char and sirloin flavor of a big New York, but even without food I found myself going back to the bottle for another quick taste. This wine has wonderful complexity. When it comes down right down to it, there is little substitute for the right soil composition combined with climate and vine age. Mt George is legendary as a micro climate. Mt George is an ancient volcano. The soil composition of gravel and ancient volcanic ash combines with both warm days and cool nights. These vineyards were originally planted in 1865, meaning the soil has been naturally fertilized by the vines themselves for over a century.

2012 Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon Leonardini
We will be conducting a lecture tasting at the Classic Cafe on the evening of January 24th. The subject of that tasting is the Crawford Malone Portfolio which includes a variety of blue chip California wineries. While discussing the line up with the Crawford Malone Somm we enjoyed a bottle of the 2012 Whitehall Lane Cabernet Leonardini. Noticing that it was a 2012 vintage, we assumed this was from Reggie's personal cellar and not the current release. As it turns out there are 34 bottles available. Pedigree and temperature controlled time in the bottle have done true justice to this amazing Cabernet. Dark plums brighten into blueberry and then drip into a hauntingly beautiful dark cherry finish laced with mocha, dark and white chocolate and Rutherford dust. Though this wine will cellar another 10 years minimum, 5 years in the bottle has allowed the 2012 Leonardini to evoke incredibly silky tannin layers. A small percentage of old vine Petit Verdot gives this Cabernet incredible nuance. $79 matches the low in the country and goes to $125, this is listed as 90 wholesale.

This 2012 wine was made from grapes grown in four of the Leonardini Family’s seven Estate Vineyard properties. Verdot was harvested from our Fawn Park Vineyard. The wine was aged in 80% French and 20% American oak barrels for 22 mo.
This 2012 Leonardini Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is inviting with notes of dark fruit and toasty oak. The flavor profile is focused and balanced with black berry, black cherry and polished tannins integrated through to its long, silky finish. Enjoyable today, this wine will continue to evolve through 2028.
2012 Inglenook Cask Reserve, 4 bottles remaining
We have had the pleasure of tasting the 2012 Inglenook Cask Reserve at a variety of tastings and dinners over the last few months. What stands out is a haunting combination of cherry at the front front palate which is then joined by mellow plum and cassis, entirely wrapped in exotic spice and mineral. The more breathing time you give the cask the more complex it becomes. The average price nationally is $71.00. The lowest price in the state is $70.00. There have been a number of changes of late at Inglenook, so I was anxious to taste the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask. This wine was first created in 1949 and during that era, through the 50s and early 60s, was considered one of the finest wines of California. This is the best, young Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon I have tasted during my professional career of 35 years. Dense ruby/purple with classic crème de cassis, but underlying minerality and spice box. The wine is full-bodied, but not over-the-top, yet nevertheless authoritative, rich and quite long. There is a thickness and concentration I haven't seen from this estate in many a year and this wine should age beautifully for 20-25 years at the very minimum. 93+ (RP) (10/2014)

The 2012 has really blossomed over the last year. This is the last vintage the designation 'Cask' was used for Inglenook's Cabernet Sauvignon. The Deux Chevaux Vineyard is a 60-acre vineyard situated in the Yountville Appellation, northeast of the town of Yountville. The vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. Deux Chevaux is French for "two horses," the namesake of Tamber Bey.
A deep, dark nose, with notes of cassis, blueberry, sweet vanilla, pie crust and a light smokiness. The mouthfeel is masculine, with blueberry and black stone fruit, ground coffee and tar. The finish delivers cinnamon spice, raspberry seed, turmeric and cold ash.
Food Pairing: Steak, a good burger, Beef short ribs and other braised beef dishes, Slow-braised beef - or venison, Butterflied leg of lamb, Portabellp mushrooms, Cheese, especially cheddar, Gouda or Vella Jack. And milder blue cheeses such as Gorgonzola. Especially in combination with steak or a burger. Polenta can also help make a Cabernet shine.

Juicy and soft in blackberry and stone fruit, the wine is cradled by generous tannins and herbal tones. From winery: Silverado Vineyards' Mount George vineyard was the first planted to vinifera in the Coombsville AVA. Under the care of pioneering Napa vintner, Henry Hagen, the vineyard known then as Cedar Knoll established its reputation in the 1880's as a source for fine red wines, winning a silver medal at the 1889 Paris International Exposition. Here, the classic Claret varieties thrive on the deep, gravelly down- slopes of the ancient volcano whose name the vineyard now bears. In 1987, Silverado Vineyards founders, Ron and Diane Disney Miller, purchased a significant portion of the historic Cedar Knoll site as part of the winery's journey toward its now exclusively estate-grown model. Over the years, their Mount George ranch has proven to be a contributor to Silverado's Estate and Limited Cabernet blends, and is the sole origin of the estate's single-vineyard Merlot. As the 20th anniversary of Silverado's first Mount George harvest approached in 2012, the decision was made to make a wine for the occasion. It is called GEO - Greek for "Earth" and short for "George" - and it represents the highest expression of single-vineyard Cabernet from this extraordinary place.
2012 GEO Cabernet Sauvignon : The 2012 vintage was pure joy. The growing season was moderate with spring and summer being warm, but not challenged with heat spikes. The vines looked full and balanced which fooled most growers and winemakers. As soon as we started to pick, we realized this was going to be a monumentally large harvest. With the con-tinuing moderate weather, we let the fruit mature at an even pace. After the first few pump-overs of fresh wine, we knew that this was going to be a special vintage. The fruit was not overripe, but entirely mature: skins, seeds and pulp. This resulted in a wine that is dark in color, round and powerful. It has bright berry and herb aromas, dense mid palette with good structure and a long finish that encapsulates the essence of barrel and delicious blue and red fruit.
Silverado Vineyards is in Yountville, in Napa Valley. It was founded in 1981 when Diane and Ron Miller purchased the property. Their inaugural releases were 1981 Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs and Cabernet Sauvignon. Today the estate owns 345 acres and makes a portfolio of wines, including Merlot and Sangiovese. Flagship wines remain the reserve Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays.
Coombsville AVA is one of Napa Valley's newer appellations, having received its official designation only in 2011. Tucked just to the northeast of Los Carneros and a few minutes' drive east of downtown Napa, the Coombsville appellation is relatively large at a total of 11,000 acres. The elevation varies from 100 to 1,000 feet, and the climate is moderated by marine breezes from the San Pablo Bay. The main grape varieties here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot

Michele and I both thought it was seriously delightful, very layered with both red and black fruit and a truly appealing tannin layer laced with chocolate and a hint of char. The grapes from this vineyard are used in our Cabernet Sauvignon Mayacamas Range blend every year. In great vintages we choose a few of the best barrels for a single vineyard bottling and 2011 was one of those years when the fruit was perfectly ripe and perfectly balanced.
This single vineyard wine is from a 3 acre site at the very top of the Mayacamas Mountains, perfectly situated on a western facing slope. All of the fruit from this vineyard was intended for our Mayacamas Range Cabernet Sauvignon blend but as we tasted various vineyard sites from barrel to show visitors the differences elevation and vineyard facings can make, they kept telling us how incredibly tasty this wine was and that we needed to bottle some by itself. We're glad they convinced us to do it. We selected the best three barrels and bottled a scarce 74 cases.
2014 Substance Cabernet, Columbia Valley, only 36 bottles remaining
For those of you who like good Cabernet and occasionally like paying less than the average good Cabernet price, we would like to offer 2014 Substance Cabernet, Columbia Valley. The winemaker is Charles Smith, who is widely respected. This is big black plum and blackberry fruit. The Substance has excellent length and is quite polished while still retaining character. $ 17.50! 10 cases at this price.
Depth and layer upon layer, black cassis, dark cherry, tobacco leaf and morels. Then, pushes on to a full palate, that is savory, mineral driven and earthbound. Smooth, long, compelling... in a word: harmonious.

2012 Laurel Glen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
One thousand cases were produced. Parker gave it 95 points ( below ) . This is high altitude fruit (800- 1000 ft ) Sonoma Mountain. The small bit have in the glass is explosive with black, blue, and red fruit. There is a core of mocha and pine with explosive chocolate and cherry compote at the finish. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a small cuvée of only 1,006 cases harvested October 6-15, 2012. The wine was aged in 50% new French oak. The history of the site is ancient, with vines having first been planted in the 1880s. Beautiful blueberry and blackberry fruit jump from the glass of this dense ruby/purple wine. Full-bodied and ripe with sweet tannin, terrific lushness and beautiful purity and density, this is a super-strong effort from Laurel Glen. There were 12,300 cases produced in 2013, and this vintage of Insignia is certainly going to turn out to be one of the great ones. The wine offers a stunning inky blue/purple color, a gorgeous nose of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, pen ink, graphite, new saddle leather and barrique. 2012 Burgess Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, NAPA
We tasted the Burgess Napa Cabernet with Reggie Evans a couple of weeks ago and we thought it stylistically beautiful and quite serious. This wine is all about the depth of Napa fruit, blueberry and blackberry are prominent, that combined with a winemaking style that preserves complexity and character. Pine needles, rustic dust are just a few of the complex notes revealed within the very long finish.
We have not written about this wine until today because we were waiting for the deal to come into play.
And this one is ready for the table tonight, it has unwound. Normal $45-54. 6 cases only $33 per, the lowest price on the net.
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from Burgess hits the palate with an exotic concoction of dark fruit, pencil shavings, spices, tobacco, cedar, savory herbs, licorice and lavender. Dark and imposing, the 2012 possesses superb richness, with plenty of Howell Mountain character and intensity. The silkiness of the vintage has softened some of the contours, but this remains a distinctly savory and mineral-inflected Cabernet with tons of hillside character. Today, the 2012 comes across as tightly wound and in need of further cellaring, so readers should not be in any rush to open bottles. This distinctly old-school leaning Cabernet will also thrill readers seeking value, as it delivers superb quality and personality for the money. The Burgess family has made distinctive Cabernets from their estate vineyard at the base of Howell Mountain since the early 1970s. I really love the crispness, acidity and linearity of this vintage that stands so far away from the more opulent and robust editions of the past. Angelo Gaja has interpreted the 2014 vintage very nicely in his beautiful property on the Tuscan Coast. Instead of looking for power and thickness, he strives for finesse and crispness. Yes, the vintage was cooler and wetter, but his skill in obtaining these qualities should not go overlooked. This is a different kind of Gaja wine (made with Merlot and Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc), but a very worthwhile expression nonetheless. The Gaja Winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. This just crossed desk this am. New to us. But it is Grand Cru and they seem to be doing the same as Copinet by blending vintage champagne and recently disgorging. $45 per, $39.50 on six packs (six pack price is lowest in country) Distributor got by mistake so offered us a deal. Roland Champion Champagne Blanc de Blancs NV is aged for minimum 30 months (the minimum for NV is 15 months). This cuvee is made from 100% Chardonnay and is produced from the free run juice only. The current release is the result of the blend of the 2005, the 2006 and the 2007 vintage.
Fresh and delicate, its fine bubbles and wide range of aromas will be perfect as an aperitif. This Champagne will also match very well with seafood and shellfish.
